Matthew Shepard's mother on her work, her son, and the hate crime bill named for him
The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act has made history: President Obama signs it into law on Oct. 28. But Judy Shepard's work is far from done. Ever since Matthew's brutal murder in 1998, Judy Shepard has been working tirelessly for LGBT rights, hate crime legislation and justice for her son.
Judy sat down with OSTV and talked about her new book, "The Meaning of Matthew: My Son’s Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed." In this intimate interview, she reveals a Matthew the outside world never knew.
From sharing Matthew's favorite Halloween costume, to the other tragic events that befell him before his untimely death, to the medical news she received after the attack that shocked even her, Judy Shepard paints an honest and fully-realized portrait of the son she lost.
